Lionel Messi and David Beckham were subjected to boos following Inter Miami’s latest friendly, with angry fans in Hong Kong demanding a refund.

WHAT HAPPENED?
The vast majority of those in attendance had turned up hoping to catch a glimpse of eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi in action. Tickets had been changing hands for upwards of $125, with the game selling out within an hour back in December.

THE BIGGER PICTURE
Messi remained rooted to the bench throughout a 4-1 win for Inter Miami, alongside former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez, and chants of “we want Messi” rang out during the second half. Frustration turned to anger at the final whistle, as jeers rained down from the stands.

Inter Miami co-owner Beckham was drowned out by boos when trying to thank those inside the stadium “for their incredible support”, with thumbs-down gestures also aimed in the Manchester United legend’s direction. Supporters began to chant for refunds once it became apparent that Messi would not be taking to the field.

WHAT HONG KONG GOVERNMENT SAID
The Hong Kong government said in a statement: “Regarding Messi not playing the match today, the Government, as well as all football fans, are extremely disappointed about the organiser’s arrangement. The organiser owes all football fans an explanation.”
